EvCC Reads!: 2020 Reading Challenge

A guide to books we're reading and talking about this year.

Join This Challenge (Or Make Your Own)

What will you read this year?  With so many enthusiastic readers sharing on the Internet, there is a list out there sure to suit your time and interest. Have you created your own challenge?  Send that information by clicking here and I will add it to the page.  Need a little inspiration? Take a few minutes and click on the video below. As Lisa Bu adjusted to a new life in the United States, she turned to books to expand her mind and create a new path for herself. She shares her unique approach to reading in this lovely, personal talk about the magic of books. Read on!

Read with Me - Novels that Shaped Our World

Late in 2019, the BBC published a list of what they entitled 100 Novels That Shaped Our World. They "asked a panel of leading writers, curators and critics to choose 100 genre-busting novels that have had an impact on their lives, and this is the result. These English language novels, written over the last 300 years, range from children’s classics to popular page turners." The 100 books have been grouped into 10 lists and you can see all of those by clicking here. My challenge to you (and to me) is to read the 10 novels that focus specifically on the question of identity and approach it from so many perspectives.  Here's the list - let's dig in and do this in 2020:

  1. Beloved by Toni Morrison
  2. Days Without End by Sebastian Barry
  3. Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels
  4. Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  5. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
  6. Small Island by Andrea Levy
  7. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
  8. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
  9. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe;
  10. White Teeth by Zadie Smith

Check back and I'll share more about each title.  Beginning with Beloved, here's a clip from Toni Morrison.

EvCC Readers Choose Their Own Challenge

Analisa Gonzales - Trade Phone for Books challenge

In an effort to both read more and spend less time on social media, I'm challenging myself to have a book with me at (almost) all times, so when I find myself mindlessly picking up my phone and opening IG, I can pick up and open my book instead. For Doexample, during breaks at work, when I can't sleep at night, when I'm bored at home with nothing to do, etc.
