Tips on transforming your ideas for a topic into search terms that can be entered into our databases and Internet search engines.
Each database has its own distinct look, but the strategy for searching them is similar. You can enter terms in quotes to ensure that the words will be together in the article, such as "learning disabilities".
You can also use Boolean operators for advanced searches: (children OR kids) AND (television OR media OR "video games") AND violence
OR should be used between terms that are synonyms.
AND joins together different concepts.
Capitalization of the Boolean operators is not required, but is done here for emphasis.
Peer reviewed journals are aimed at scholars and researchers in a particular field. Articles are evaluated by experts in the authors' field before publication.
Many of the above databases have a box you can check before searching to limit your results to 'scholarly journals' or 'peer reviewed journals.'
