Cosmetology Subject Guide: Searching for Books and Using the Library Catalog

Cosmetology resources online and at EvCC Library

Search Tips

The library collection is small to medium-sized, which means that searching with very specific terms may bring up few if any results.  If this occurs, use a broader term.

For instance, instead of looking up dreadlocks try hair  or  hairstyles or hairstyling.

Note well: cosmetology  is not a  Library of Congress subject heading but beauty and hairdressing and beauty operators are all subject headings and may be a preferred way of searching.  If used, make sure you specify a subject search.  This will narrow your retrieval but give you more relevant results.

Here are some suggested subject headings that you can search on in our catalog:

Barbering
Beauty Culture
Beauty Shops
Beauty Operators
Cosmetics
Eye Makeup
Haircutting
Hairdressing
Hairstyles
Skin Care

Where in the Library.....?

 can I find books?

The EvCC library like most college libraries uses the Library of Congress Classification system.  Materials that deal with  Hairdressing and Beauty Operators will be in the TT950 to TT979 range.

Skin and nail diseases and disorders will be located, however, in the RL1-803 (the R class stands for health and medicine)

Ask the librarian for help if you cannot find any book!

Interlibrary Loan

Sometimes, a book or article that you want is not available at the EvCC library.  Often, we can borrow the resource from another library at no cost to you.  This make take a week or two.  Ask a librarian for assistance if you're not familiar with this process.
